About this exercise

The Barbell Front Rack Lunge is a lower-body compound movement where a barbell is held in the front rack position — resting on the front deltoids with elbows high — while performing a forward lunge. This position increases core and upper-back demands compared to a back-rack or goblet lunge, making it an excellent test of total-body stability.

How to Perform

  • Set a barbell in a rack at shoulder height and position it across your front deltoids with your elbows driven high and parallel to the floor
  • Un-rack the barbell and stand with feet hip-width apart
  • Take a controlled step forward with one leg, landing flat-footed
  • Lower your back knee toward the floor, keeping your front shin as vertical as possible
  • Drive through your front heel to push back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one leg or alternate legs each repetition
