About this exercise

The Barbell Front Push Press is a dynamic overhead pressing movement performed standing, with the barbell racked across the front of the shoulders (in front of the head). A brief leg dip and explosive leg drive generate momentum to move heavier loads overhead than a strict press allows, loading the front and side deltoids and triceps through a full overhead range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Unrack the barbell from a rack at shoulder height and let it rest across the front of your shoulders, in front of your neck, with an overhand grip slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Stand tall with feet about shoulder-width apart and your core braced
  • Dip by bending the knees slightly while keeping your torso upright
  • Explosively drive through the legs to create momentum, then press the bar up and slightly back until it locks out overhead
  • Lower the bar back to the front of your shoulders under control
  • Reset your stance and repeat for the desired number of repetitions
