About this exercise

The barbell front bench squat is a front squat variation where the barbell is held in a front rack position and you squat down until you touch a bench, ensuring consistent depth on every rep. Keeping the torso upright places maximum emphasis on the quadriceps while reducing lower back strain.

How to Perform

  • Set a bench directly behind you and load the barbell on a squat rack at shoulder height
  • Step under the bar and create a front rack position: elbows high, bar resting on the front deltoids and upper chest
  • Unrack the bar and step back, feet shoulder-width apart with toes slightly turned out
  • Brace your core, keep your chest up and elbows elevated throughout the movement
  • Descend by pushing your knees out and sitting back until you lightly touch the bench
  • Pause briefly without relaxing onto the bench, then drive through your heels to stand
  • Lock out your hips and knees at the top before beginning the next rep
