About this exercise

A compound lower-body exercise in which a barbell is held across the upper back while the same leg performs a forward lunge followed immediately by a reverse lunge, creating continuous tension on the quadriceps, glutes, and hamstrings without returning the foot to the starting position between lunges.

How to Perform

  • Set a barbell on a squat rack at shoulder height, step under it and position it across your upper traps
  • Unrack the bar, step back, and stand with feet hip-width apart
  • Step forward with your right foot into a forward lunge, lowering your left knee toward the floor
  • Without pausing, push off the right heel to bring the right leg back and continue directly into a reverse lunge with the right foot stepping behind you
  • Push through the left foot to return to the standing position — that is one rep
  • Perform all reps on one side before switching, or alternate legs each rep
  • Keep your torso upright and core braced throughout
