About this exercise

A seated calf raise performed on the floor where a barbell is placed across the lower thighs, just above the knees, and you raise your heels by plantar-flexing the ankle. This improvised variation effectively targets the soleus — the muscle that is most active during seated calf work — without the need for a dedicated calf machine.

How to Perform

  • Sit on the floor with your legs extended or knees bent at roughly 90 degrees with feet flat on the floor
  • Roll a barbell over your thighs and position it just above your knees
  • Hold the barbell in place with both hands to stabilize it
  • Raise both heels as high as possible by pressing the balls of your feet into the floor
  • Hold the peak contraction for a moment, squeezing the calves
  • Slowly lower your heels back to the floor
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
