About this exercise

The barbell explosive bench press is a power-focused variation of the standard bench press where the concentric phase is performed with maximum intentional speed. Developing rate of force development in the chest, shoulders, and triceps, it is commonly used in athletic training and powerlifting programmes to improve pressing strength and bar speed.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on a bench with your feet firmly on the floor and set a slightly wider than shoulder-width grip on the barbell
  • Unrack the bar and hold it directly above your chest with arms fully extended
  • Lower the bar in a controlled arc to your mid-chest, maintaining tension in your back and shoulder blades retracted
  • At the bottom, explosively drive the bar upward with maximum force as fast as possible
  • Maintain control at lockout and do not bounce the bar off your chest
  • Reset and repeat for the prescribed number of reps, keeping bar speed high on every rep
