HardQuadriceps

About this exercise

A barbell squat variation that combines heel elevation with a clean (front-rack) grip to maximise quadriceps recruitment and allow a more upright torso. Elevating the heels shifts the center of mass forward and increases knee flexion depth, while the clean grip reinforces thoracic extension and keeps the bar stable across the front deltoids, making it a demanding but effective quad-focused strength movement.

How to Perform

  • Set the barbell at shoulder height in a squat rack and lift it into a clean/front-rack position with fingers under the bar, elbows high
  • Position your heels on a squat wedge or weight plates to achieve the desired elevation
  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and toes slightly turned out
  • Brace the core and keep the elbows high, then descend by sitting the hips back and down
  • Squat as deep as possible while maintaining an upright torso and keeping elbows elevated
  • Drive through the entire foot to extend the hips and knees back to the starting position
