About this exercise

The barbell clean-grip front squat is a technically demanding compound movement where the barbell rests on the front deltoids with elbows driven high in the Olympic front rack position. It places intense demand on the quadriceps and requires significant thoracic mobility and core stability to maintain an upright torso throughout the lift.

How to Perform

  • Set the barbell in a squat rack at approximately shoulder height
  • Step under the bar and position it on your front deltoids with elbows pushed high, forming the clean (front rack) grip
  • Unrack the bar and step back, feet shoulder-width apart with toes slightly turned out
  • Brace your core and keep your elbows elevated as you descend by pushing your knees out and sitting your hips down
  • Squat to at least parallel, keeping your torso as upright as possible and heels flat on the floor
  • Drive through your heels to stand back up, maintaining high elbows throughout
  • Re-rack the bar once your set is complete
