About this exercise

The barbell clean and press is a full-body strength and power movement that combines an explosive clean to bring the bar to shoulder height with a strict overhead press to lock it out above the head. It demands coordination, timing, and total-body strength, making it one of the most complete compound exercises available.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and the barbell over your mid-foot, shins close to the bar
  • Hinge at the hips and grip the bar with an overhand grip just outside your legs, back flat and chest up
  • Drive through your legs explosively, extending the hips and knees rapidly to accelerate the bar upward
  • As the bar rises, shrug your shoulders and pull your elbows high, then drop under the bar and catch it at shoulder height with elbows forward (the clean)
  • Stand up fully from the catch position, bar resting on your front deltoids
  • Dip slightly at the knees, then drive upward and press the bar overhead until your arms are fully locked out
  • Lower the bar back to your shoulders with control, then return it to the floor to complete the rep
