About this exercise

The clean and jerk is the definitive Olympic weightlifting competition lift, combining an explosive clean to bring the barbell to the front rack followed by a powerful overhead jerk. It develops full-body strength, speed, and coordination while demanding precise technique under heavy load.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and grip the barbell just outside your legs
  • Drive through the floor, extending hips and knees explosively to pull the bar upward
  • Pull yourself under the bar and receive it in the front rack position with elbows high and knees bent
  • Stand fully upright from the squat, stabilising the bar across your shoulders
  • Dip slightly at the knees, then drive powerfully upward and split your feet front and back to catch the bar overhead with locked arms
  • Recover by stepping back foot forward then front foot back to bring feet together
  • Lower the bar under control back to the floor
