About this exercise

A board press variation where a single wooden board is placed on the chest to limit the range of motion, typically to about 2–3 inches off the chest. This technique overloads the mid-range and lockout portions of the bench press, commonly used by powerlifters to strengthen weak points.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on a bench and unrack the barbell with a slightly wider than shoulder-width grip
  • Have a partner place a single board (approximately 2 inches thick) flat on your chest
  • Lower the barbell in a controlled arc until it touches the board
  • Press the bar back up explosively to full arm extension
  • Keep your shoulder blades retracted and feet flat on the floor throughout
  • Re-rack the bar after completing all reps
