About this exercise

A unilateral lower-body exercise where you step laterally up onto a bench while a barbell rests across your upper back. It develops single-leg strength and stability in the quadriceps and glutes, while the lateral approach challenges hip stability differently than a standard forward step-up.

How to Perform

  • Set up a barbell in a squat rack and position a flat bench beside it at a comfortable height
  • Unrack the barbell and rest it across your upper back, then stand beside the bench with your side facing it
  • Place the foot of your working leg flat on top of the bench
  • Drive through the heel of the elevated leg to step up and stand fully upright on the bench
  • Slowly lower yourself back down to the floor under control
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
  • Keep your torso upright and core braced throughout the movement
