About this exercise

The Barbell Behind the Neck Push Press is a dynamic overhead pressing movement performed standing, with the barbell racked on the upper traps behind the neck (behind the head). A brief leg dip and explosive leg drive generate momentum to move heavier loads overhead than a strict press allows. Racking behind the neck shifts emphasis onto the side and rear deltoids and demands good shoulder mobility.

How to Perform

  • Unrack the barbell from a rack and let it rest across your upper traps, behind your neck, with an overhand grip slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart and your core braced
  • Dip slightly by bending your knees to about 10–15 degrees while keeping your torso vertical
  • Explosively drive your legs straight, transferring force into the bar, and press it directly overhead until the elbows lock out
  • Keep the bar stacked over the mid-foot at lockout
  • Lower the bar back to the upper-trap position behind your neck under control
  • Reset your stance and repeat for the desired number of repetitions

About the Push Press

The Push Press is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
