Barbell Behind the Back Shrug

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Barbell Behind the Back Shrug.

MediumTrapezius

About this exercise

The barbell behind the back shrug is a trapezius exercise where the barbell is held behind the body, allowing a natural pulling angle that targets the upper and mid-trapezius without requiring the shoulders to round forward. This rear-hold position also reduces wrist strain compared to a standard front shrug.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and a loaded barbell resting on a rack behind you at hip height
  • Grip the bar with an overhand grip just outside hip width and lift it off the rack
  • Let the bar hang behind your glutes with arms fully extended
  • Keep your chest up, chin neutral, and spine tall throughout
  • Shrug your shoulders straight up toward your ears as high as possible
  • Hold the top position briefly to maximise trap contraction
  • Lower the bar under control back to the starting position and repeat
