About this exercise

A squat variation that combines a barbell on the back, a resistance band around the knees, and a bench as a depth target. The band challenges hip abductors to keep the knees tracking outward throughout the movement, while the bench teaches consistent squat depth.

How to Perform

  • Set a bench behind you and position a barbell across your upper traps in a squat rack
  • Step back and place a short resistance band just above your knees
  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, toes slightly turned out
  • Brace your core, push your knees out against the band, and descend until you lightly touch the bench
  • Pause briefly without fully sitting, then drive through your heels to return to standing
  • Keep your chest tall and knees tracking over your toes throughout the movement
