About this exercise

A flat bench press variation in which resistance bands are looped around the bar and anchored to the bench or floor, increasing tension as the bar rises toward lockout. This accommodating resistance challenges the chest, triceps, and shoulders throughout the full range while developing explosive pressing power.

How to Perform

  • Secure a resistance band around each end of the barbell and anchor the loops under the bench legs or to heavy dumbbells on the floor
  • Lie flat on the bench, grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width, and unrack it with straight arms
  • Inhale, brace your core, and lower the bar in a controlled arc to mid-chest
  • Drive the bar back up explosively, extending the arms fully while keeping the shoulder blades retracted
  • Lock out at the top — note that band tension will be greatest here
  • Lower under control for the next rep without relaxing tension in the upper back
