Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Barbell Behind-Back Wide Shrug.

MediumTrapezius

About this exercise

The barbell behind-back wide shrug targets the upper trapezius with the bar held behind the body and a wide overhand grip. Holding the bar behind the hips changes the line of pull and emphasizes a slightly different portion of the trapezius compared to a standard front shrug.

How to Perform

  • Stand in front of a barbell placed in a rack at hip height or lift it from the floor
  • Turn so the bar is behind you and grip it with a wide overhand grip, wider than shoulder-width
  • Stand tall with the bar resting behind your glutes and arms fully extended
  • Shrug your shoulders straight up toward your ears as high as possible
  • Hold briefly at the top and squeeze the trapezius muscles
  • Lower your shoulders back down in a controlled motion
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
