About this exercise

The barbell split squat is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed with a barbell across the upper back, one foot placed forward and the other behind in a stationary split stance. It develops single-leg strength and muscle balance in the quadriceps and glutes.

How to Perform

  • Set up a barbell on a squat rack at shoulder height and unrack it across your upper back
  • Step one foot forward and one foot back into a split stance roughly hip-width apart
  • Stand tall with your chest up and core braced
  • Lower your back knee toward the floor by bending both knees to approximately 90 degrees
  • Keep your front knee tracking over your toes and your torso upright throughout
  • Drive through your front heel to return to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
