About this exercise

A unilateral lower-body exercise that adds resistance band load to a classic step-up movement. It builds quad and glute strength while improving single-leg stability and balance.

How to Perform

  • Stand facing a sturdy step or box with a resistance band anchored under your stepping foot
  • Hold the band ends at shoulder height
  • Place the same foot fully on the step
  • Drive through the heel of the elevated foot to step up, bringing your trailing leg up to a 90-degree position
  • Lower the trailing leg back down slowly and with control
  • Complete all reps on one leg before switching sides

The Band Step Up is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
