About this exercise

The band single leg split squat with ring is a unilateral lower-body exercise combining a resistance band for added load with a gymnastic ring to elevate and destabilise the rear foot. The band resistance increases throughout the ascent, creating a challenging stimulus for the quads and glutes while the ring demands constant hip and ankle stability.

How to Perform

  • Anchor a resistance band overhead or at a high point and loop it around your shoulders or hold it in front of your chest
  • Set a gymnastic ring at approximately knee height and stand a lunge-length in front of it
  • Place the top of your rear foot into the ring and find your balance
  • Brace your core and lower your hips straight down, keeping your front shin as vertical as possible
  • Descend until your front thigh is parallel to the floor or your rear knee nearly touches the ground
  • Drive through the heel of your front foot to press back up against the band resistance
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
