About this exercise

The band fixed back underhand pulldown mimics a lat pulldown using a resistance band anchored overhead, with a supinated (underhand) grip. The underhand grip recruits the biceps more and shifts the lat emphasis toward the lower fibers, making it a good cable-free back exercise.

How to Perform

  • Anchor a resistance band securely to a fixed point overhead
  • Kneel or sit facing the anchor point and grasp the band with both hands using an underhand (palms-up) grip, hands shoulder-width apart
  • Start with arms fully extended overhead and sit back slightly to create tension in the band
  • Keeping your chest tall and core braced, pull your elbows down and back toward your sides
  • Draw the band toward your upper chest while squeezing your shoulder blades together
  • Hold the contracted position for a brief pause
  • Slowly extend your arms back overhead to the starting position under control
  • Avoid shrugging your shoulders or leaning excessively backward during the pull
