About this exercise

The Band Bench Press is a chest exercise performed lying on a flat bench, pressing a resistance band upward instead of a barbell. The band provides accommodating resistance that increases as you reach lockout, making the top portion of the press more challenging and developing explosive chest strength.

How to Perform

  • Secure a resistance band under the bench legs or around the bench frame at each side
  • Lie flat on the bench and grip the band at shoulder width, with your palms facing forward
  • Plant your feet flat on the floor and press your upper back firmly into the bench
  • Lower the band to your mid-chest under control, feeling the stretch across your chest
  • Press the band up explosively until your arms are fully extended
  • Pause briefly at the top, then lower back to the starting position with control
