About this exercise

A pull-up variation that uses a looped resistance band for support, reducing the amount of bodyweight you must lift and making pull-ups accessible to beginners or useful for building volume. The band provides the most assistance at the bottom of the movement where you are weakest.

How to Perform

  • Loop a resistance band securely over the pull-up bar
  • Grip the bar with an overhand grip, slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Place one or both knees (or feet) into the loop of the band
  • Hang at full arm extension, keeping your shoulders engaged
  • Pull yourself up by driving your elbows down toward your hips
  • Continue until your chin is above the bar
  • Lower yourself slowly back to the starting position with arms fully extended
