Band-Assisted Chin-Up (from Knee)

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Band-Assisted Chin-Up (from Knee).

EasyRear shouldersTrapezius

About this exercise

A chin-up performed with the assistance of a looped resistance band anchored to the pull-up bar and supporting the knees, reducing the effective load and making the movement accessible to those building upper-body pulling strength. The supinated grip emphasises the biceps alongside the latissimus dorsi.

How to Perform

  • Loop a resistance band over the pull-up bar and let it hang down
  • Place both knees inside the loop so the band supports your weight from below
  • Grip the bar with your palms facing toward you, hands shoulder-width apart
  • Hang at full arm extension with your core braced
  • Pull yourself upward by driving your elbows down and back until your chin clears the bar
  • Squeeze your lats and biceps at the top of the movement
  • Lower yourself slowly back to full arm extension under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
