About this exercise

The Backward Abdominal Stretch lengthens the entire anterior core by arching the spine backward, opening the chest and stretching the rectus abdominis. It is commonly used as a cool-down or mobility drill to counteract prolonged sitting or forward-flexion activities. Performing it slowly and breathing deeply maximises the stretch.

How to Perform

  • Stand or kneel on the floor with your hips aligned over your knees
  • Place your hands on your lower back or hips for support
  • Inhale deeply and gently arch your spine backward, lifting your chest toward the ceiling
  • Let your head follow naturally without forcing it back excessively
  • Hold the stretched position for the desired duration while breathing steadily
  • Exhale and slowly return to an upright position
