About this exercise

The back pec stretch is a standing or seated stretch that simultaneously opens the chest and stretches the muscles across the upper back. By clasping the hands behind the back and drawing the shoulder blades together, you lengthen the pectorals while also mobilising the thoracic spine and rear shoulder girdle.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall with your feet shoulder-width apart and spine neutral
  • Clasp your hands together behind your lower back with palms facing inward
  • Straighten your arms and gently lift them away from your body while squeezing your shoulder blades together
  • Open your chest and draw your shoulders back and down, away from your ears
  • Hold the stretch for 20–30 seconds, breathing deeply
  • Slowly release and return to the starting position
