About this exercise

The Back Extension on an Exercise Ball is a bodyweight movement that strengthens the lower back, glutes, and hamstrings while requiring core stability to control the ball. The unstable surface increases the demand on stabilizing muscles compared to a fixed bench.

How to Perform

  • Position an exercise ball on the floor and drape your hips and abdomen over it
  • Plant your feet firmly against a wall or stable surface, hip-width apart
  • Cross your arms over your chest or place your hands behind your head
  • Lower your torso toward the floor, allowing the ball to support your weight
  • Raise your torso until your body forms a straight line from head to heels
  • Squeeze your glutes and lower back at the top of the movement
  • Lower back down under control and repeat
