Assisted Weighted Push-up

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Assisted Weighted Push-up.

MediumMiddle chest

About this exercise

The assisted weighted push-up combines added load on the upper back with band assistance to help manage the total difficulty, making weighted push-up training accessible to those building toward unassisted weighted reps. It primarily targets the chest while also engaging the triceps and anterior deltoids.

How to Perform

  • Attach a resistance band to a sturdy anchor above you, or loop it across your upper back and anchor it to a low point to assist the press
  • Place a weight plate on your upper back and have a partner secure it or use a plate-holding vest
  • Assume a push-up position with hands slightly wider than shoulder-width and body forming a straight line
  • Brace your core and lower your chest to the floor in a controlled manner
  • Press back up to the starting position, using the band assistance to complete the rep if needed
  • Keep your hips level and avoid letting your lower back sag throughout the set
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
