Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Assisted Chin-Up on a Bench.

EasyBicepsMiddle back

About this exercise

A beginner-friendly chin-up variation where the feet rest on a bench to reduce the amount of body weight being pulled. This allows those building upper body strength to practice the chin-up pattern with proper form before progressing to full unassisted reps.

How to Perform

  • Place a bench beneath a pull-up bar and position your feet on it to take some load off your upper body
  • Grip the bar with a supinated (underhand) grip, hands approximately shoulder-width apart
  • Let your arms fully extend and keep only as much foot pressure on the bench as needed
  • Pull your chest toward the bar by engaging your lats and biceps
  • Continue pulling until your chin clears the bar
  • Slowly lower yourself back to the fully extended starting position
