About this exercise

Ardha Matsyendrasana, also known as Half Lord of the Fishes Pose, is a seated yoga twist that deeply stretches the spine, obliques, hips, and shoulders. The rotation massages the abdominal organs and improves spinal mobility, making it a staple in yoga practice for flexibility and relaxation.

How to Perform

  • Sit on the floor with both legs extended in front of you
  • Bend your right knee and cross your right foot over the left leg, placing the foot flat on the floor beside your left knee
  • Optionally bend your left leg and bring the left foot close to your right hip
  • Sit tall, lengthen your spine, and on an exhale rotate your torso to the right
  • Place your right hand on the floor behind you and press your left elbow against the outside of your right knee for leverage
