About this exercise

An advanced single-leg squat performed on an inflatable air pillow (balance disc), with arms extended forward as a counterbalance. The unstable surface challenges ankle, knee, and hip stabilisers, while the skater squat pattern develops unilateral leg strength and proprioception.

How to Perform

  • Place the air pillow on a flat, non-slip surface and carefully step onto the centre with one foot
  • Extend your arms straight forward at shoulder height to act as a counterbalance
  • Lift the non-working leg slightly behind you, keeping it off the pillow
  • Brace your core and maintain an upright torso throughout
  • Slowly lower your body by bending the standing knee, tracking it over the toes, until your thigh approaches parallel or as far as balance allows
  • Pause briefly at the bottom, maintaining control on the unstable surface
  • Drive through the heel to extend the knee and return to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one leg before carefully stepping off and switching sides
