About this exercise

A back extension performed on a 45-degree hyperextension bench that combines posterior chain strengthening with an active scapular adduction at the top of the movement. The added squeeze of the shoulder blades increases recruitment of the mid-back and rear shoulder muscles.

How to Perform

  • Position yourself face-down on a 45-degree hyperextension bench with your hips resting on the pad and your ankles secured under the footpads
  • Allow your torso to hang toward the floor with your arms crossed over your chest or held in front
  • Keeping your back neutral, extend your hips and raise your torso until it is in line with your legs
  • At the top, pinch your shoulder blades firmly together (scapular adduction) and hold for a moment
  • Release the shoulder blade squeeze and slowly lower your torso back to the starting position
  • Keep your neck neutral throughout and avoid hyperextending the lower back
