About this exercise

The Weighted Inverted Row is a horizontal pulling exercise performed beneath a fixed bar with a weight plate placed on the chest to increase resistance. It develops the upper and mid-back, rear deltoids, and biceps through a full range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Set a bar at waist height in a rack or on a Smith machine
  • Place a weight plate on your chest and hold it in place with one hand
  • Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width with an overhand grip
  • Hang beneath the bar with arms fully extended and body in a straight line
  • Pull your chest up toward the bar by driving your elbows back and squeezing your shoulder blades together
  • Hold briefly at the top, then lower yourself in a controlled manner until arms are fully extended
  • Keep your core tight and hips straight throughout the set
