About this exercise

The weighted decline crunch is performed on a decline bench with a weight held at the chest or behind the head, increasing resistance on the abdominals beyond what bodyweight provides. The decline angle stretches the abs at the bottom and creates a strong contraction through the full range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Set a decline bench to your preferred angle and secure your legs under the pads
  • Hold a weight plate or dumbbell at your chest or behind your head
  • Start lying back with your torso lowered, allowing a full stretch in the abs
  • Exhale and curl your torso upward toward your knees, contracting the abs
  • Pause at the top and squeeze the abdominals
  • Slowly lower your torso back to the starting position under control
  • Avoid pulling on your neck if holding the weight behind your head
