About this exercise

A squat variation where you hold a weight — such as a dumbbell, kettlebell, or weight plate — extended in front of your body as a counterbalance. The forward load shifts your centre of mass and allows a more upright torso with greater depth, increasing quad and glute activation.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, toes turned out slightly
  • Hold a dumbbell, kettlebell, or weight plate with both hands extended at chest height in front of you
  • Brace your core and keep your chest tall throughout the movement
  • Begin descending by pushing your knees out in line with your toes
  • Sink into a full squat, using the weight as a counterbalance to stay upright
  • Keep your heels flat on the floor at all times
  • Drive through your heels to return to a fully standing position
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
