About this exercise

A rotational core exercise that mimics a chopping motion, targeting the obliques through a powerful diagonal swing of the arms across the body. The twisting woodchopper can be performed with bodyweight or a medicine ball and combines core strength with explosive rotational power.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, clasp your hands together (or hold a medicine ball) and raise them above one shoulder
  • Keep your arms mostly extended and your core braced
  • Rotate your torso explosively, swinging your hands diagonally downward toward the opposite hip in a chopping arc
  • Allow your hips and knees to bend naturally as you follow through the movement
  • Decelerate and control the swing at the bottom to protect your lower back
