About this exercise

The trap bar deadlift is a compound pulling exercise performed using a hex-shaped trap bar, which allows the lifter to stand inside the bar and grip neutral handles at hip level. This stance reduces lower-back stress compared to a conventional deadlift while heavily loading the quadriceps, glutes, and hamstrings simultaneously.

How to Perform

  • Load the trap bar with the desired weight and step inside the hexagonal frame
  • Position your feet hip-width apart with the handles level with the middle of your feet
  • Hinge at the hips and bend your knees until you can grip the neutral handles firmly
  • Set a flat back, chest up, and draw your shoulder blades back and down
  • Take a deep breath, brace your core and create full-body tension
  • Drive through your heels, extending your hips and knees simultaneously to stand up
  • Lock out at the top with hips fully extended, glutes squeezed, and shoulders back
  • Hinge at the hips and lower the bar back to the floor with control
