About this exercise

Swimming Side Steps are a plyometric lateral movement drill that mimics the leg kick pattern used in swimming. Performed as a rapid side-to-side stepping sequence, this drill builds lower-body power, coordination, and cardiovascular endurance.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright with feet hip-width apart and arms relaxed at your sides
  • Step your right foot out to the right while simultaneously raising both arms overhead as if pushing through water
  • Quickly follow with your left foot, bringing feet back together
  • Immediately step to the left, repeating the arm motion in the opposite direction
  • Maintain a slight knee bend and stay on the balls of your feet throughout
  • Keep your core braced and your torso tall with each lateral step
  • Continue alternating side steps at a brisk, rhythmic pace for the prescribed time or reps
