About this exercise

The Suspension Side Squat uses suspension straps for balance assistance while performing a lateral squatting motion, shifting weight to one leg at a time. It develops unilateral leg strength in the quadriceps, glutes, and inner thigh while the straps allow you to maintain an upright torso and control depth safely.

How to Perform

  • Set the suspension straps to waist height and grip the handles in front of you
  • Stand facing the anchor point with feet slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Shift your weight to one side and bend that knee into a squat, keeping the opposite leg straight
  • Descend until your working thigh is roughly parallel to the floor, using the straps for balance support
  • Drive through the heel of the working leg to return to the starting position
  • Repeat for the target reps on one side before switching to the other leg
  • Keep your torso upright throughout and avoid letting the knee cave inward
