Suspender High Row

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Suspender High Row.

MediumTrapeziusMiddle back

About this exercise

The suspension high row uses gymnastic rings or suspension straps to perform an inverted row with elbows flaring high and wide, shifting emphasis from the lats to the upper trapezius, rear deltoids, and rhomboids. The instability of the rings adds an additional demand on scapular stability.

How to Perform

  • Set the suspension straps to a height that allows you to lean back at a challenging angle while gripping the handles
  • Stand facing the anchor point, grip the handles with palms facing down, and lean back with arms fully extended
  • Pull your chest toward the handles while driving your elbows up and out to shoulder height or above
  • Squeeze your upper back and rear delts hard at the top of the movement
  • Keep your body in a straight line from heels to shoulders throughout
  • Lower yourself slowly and with control back to the starting position
