About this exercise

A standing bodyweight exercise that targets the obliques by crunching the torso laterally. You stand upright and crunch sideways, bringing one elbow down toward the same-side hip to contract the oblique muscle. No equipment is needed, making it an accessible core drill for any setting.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and place your hands behind your head or extend your arms overhead
  • Shift your weight slightly onto one foot to create space on the working side
  • Crunch your torso laterally, bringing one elbow toward the same-side hip
  • Pause briefly at the peak contraction, squeezing the oblique
  • Return to the upright starting position in a controlled manner
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching, or alternate sides each rep
  • Keep your hips level and avoid bending forward at the waist
