About this exercise

The Standing Calf Raise performed on a staircase allows a greater range of motion than a flat-floor version by letting the heels drop below the step level for a full stretch of the gastrocnemius and soleus. Using just bodyweight and the edge of a step makes this an accessible yet effective calf-building exercise.

How to Perform

  • Stand on the edge of a step with the balls of your feet on the step and your heels hanging off
  • Hold a wall or railing lightly for balance
  • Lower your heels as far below the step as your flexibility allows to fully stretch the calves
  • Push through the balls of your feet and rise as high onto your toes as possible
  • Pause briefly at the top to maximise contraction
  • Slowly lower back to the starting position and repeat
