Stationary Lunge

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Stationary Lunge.

MediumGlutesQuadriceps

About this exercise

A unilateral lower-body exercise performed with a staggered stance that isolates each leg in turn, targeting the quadriceps and glutes while demanding balance and stability. Because neither foot moves during the set, it differs from a walking or reverse lunge.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright and step one foot forward and the other foot back into a wide staggered stance
  • Keep your torso tall and your core braced throughout the movement
  • Lower your back knee toward the floor by bending both knees simultaneously
  • Descend until your front thigh is roughly parallel to the floor
  • Keep your front knee tracking over your second toe — do not let it cave inward
  • Drive through your front heel to return to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one leg before switching to the other side

About the Stationary Lunge

The Stationary Lunge is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
