About this exercise

The Spin Back Kick is a powerful martial arts–inspired plyometric exercise in which you rotate 180 degrees and thrust one leg straight back, engaging the glutes and hamstrings with explosive hip extension. It challenges balance, coordination, and lower-body power simultaneously.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart and hands raised in a guard position
  • Pivot on your front foot, rotating your body 180 degrees away from the target
  • As you complete the spin, look over your shoulder to locate the target
  • Drive the heel of the kicking leg straight back with force, extending the hip fully
  • Keep the supporting knee slightly bent and core braced throughout the movement
  • Recoil the kicking leg and land in a controlled stance
  • Repeat for the desired reps before switching legs
