About this exercise

The Smith machine deadlift replicates the conventional deadlift hinge pattern using a guided bar path, reducing the balance and stabilisation demands of a free barbell. It is a practical option for beginners building posterior-chain strength or for lifters who want to train the deadlift movement with added stability.

How to Perform

  • Set the Smith machine bar to just below knee height and stand with feet hip-width apart, bar over mid-foot
  • Hinge at the hips and bend your knees to grip the bar with an overhand grip just outside your legs
  • Brace your core, flatten your back, and pull your shoulders back and down before initiating the lift
  • Drive through your heels and extend your hips and knees simultaneously to stand up, dragging the bar close to your body
  • Lock out at the top by squeezing your glutes and standing tall — avoid hyperextending the lower back
  • Hinge back down with control to return the bar to the starting position
