Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Skater Jumps.

MediumGlutesQuadriceps

About this exercise

An explosive lateral plyometric movement that mimics the side-to-side stride of a speed skater, developing single-leg power, balance, and cardiovascular conditioning. The alternating lateral hops challenge the glutes and outer thighs while improving agility.

How to Perform

  • Stand on your right foot with a slight knee bend and lean slightly forward at the hips
  • Push off your right foot to leap laterally to the left, landing softly on your left foot
  • Upon landing, allow your right leg to swing behind your left leg for balance, mimicking a skating stride
  • Absorb the landing by bending your left knee and keeping your chest up
  • Immediately push off your left foot and leap back to the right, landing on your right foot
  • Continue alternating sides in a controlled rhythm for the target reps or duration
  • Keep landings soft and controlled — avoid letting your knee cave inward

About the Skater Jumps

The Skater Jumps is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
