About this exercise

A back extension performed seated upright on a machine, pushing the torso backward against a padded lever. The machine allows external load for progressive overload while the movement isolates the erector spinae with help from the glutes and hamstrings.

How to Perform

  • Adjust the machine so the pad sits just below your hip bones and your hips can flex freely
  • Secure your feet under the ankle supports and hold any additional weight against your chest or behind your head
  • Begin in a straight-line position with your torso aligned with your legs
  • Hinge at the hips, lowering your upper body downward in a controlled arc
  • Stop when you feel a deep stretch in the lower back and hamstrings
  • Reverse the movement by contracting the glutes and lower back to raise your torso back to the starting position
  • Avoid hyperextending past a neutral spine at the top of the movement
