About this exercise

The Single Leg Squat, commonly called a Pistol Squat, is an advanced bodyweight movement that requires exceptional leg strength, flexibility, and balance. The non-working leg is held extended in front of the body throughout the descent.

How to Perform

  • Stand on one foot with the other leg extended in front of you at hip height
  • Extend your arms forward for counterbalance
  • Slowly bend the standing knee and lower your hips as if sitting into a chair on one leg
  • Descend as deep as possible while keeping your heel flat on the floor and the raised leg extended
  • At the bottom, your standing thigh should ideally be below parallel
  • Drive through the heel to press back up to standing
  • Keep the torso as upright as possible and control the descent throughout
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
