Side Plank Thread the Needle

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Side Plank Thread the Needle.

MediumAbsGlutes

About this exercise

The side plank rotation adds a rotational "thread the needle" movement to the classic side plank, turning a static hold into a dynamic exercise that targets the obliques and core stabilizers. Rotating the top arm under the body and back builds anti-rotation strength and improves thoracic mobility at the same time.

How to Perform

  • Start in a side plank position with your feet stacked and your supporting forearm or hand on the floor
  • Extend your top arm straight up toward the ceiling
  • Rotate your torso and sweep the top arm under your body as if threading a needle
  • Keep your hips lifted throughout the rotation and do not let them sag
  • Reverse the rotation and return the top arm to the ceiling
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch sides
