Side Plank Hip Dip

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Side Plank Hip Dip.

MediumCoreObliques

About this exercise

A unilateral core stability exercise performed from a side plank position in which the hips are repeatedly dipped toward the floor and raised back to alignment. The dynamic hip movement challenges the obliques, deep lateral core, and hip abductors to a greater degree than a static side plank hold.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side with your feet stacked and your supporting elbow directly beneath your shoulder
  • Lift your hips off the floor so your body forms a straight diagonal line from head to feet
  • Slowly lower your hips toward the floor without letting them touch
  • Drive your hips back up to the straight-line position by contracting your obliques
  • Keep your supporting shoulder packed and your top hand on your hip or extended overhead
  • Avoid rotating your torso — keep your chest facing forward throughout
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other
